Hi jodi,

Cafergot, an ergotamine is used to abort or stop, a Migraine attack. Other abortives include triptans like Imitrex and Axert and isometheptene compounds like Midrin.

Hi Jodi, Please be wary of taking cafergot to abort your headaches because it has a lot of harmful sideeffects. It causes rebound headaches and you end up taking one daily. Also it affects blood flow to the extremities and for me,my finger tips started turning blue each time i took it.It was only then that the doc told me not to use it again. I have also heard of another migraneur who had permanent side effects from it.So pls be careful! At the same time it is very effective in aborting migraines,so very tempting to reach for it each time! Also each person's reaction and tolerance to the drug varies,so,it is better to use it under the guidance of a doctor and let him decide for you. Hope this info is useful to you. jay Reply
