Q: Is there any way migraines, seizures, and a tumor on your pituitary gland be related?

I started having headeaches when i was 12. They hit all of a sudden and i spent most of my time in the hospital. Then (i'm 16 now) right before my 16th birthday i started havin seizures. We went to a Neurologist in Spartanburg, SC. I had never had a eeg or mri. She ran both and diagnosed me with Juvenille Myoclonic Epilepsy and a Pituitary Gland Tumor. But she is leaving to go to Georgetown to teach. I can't find a doctor that will treat my seizures and migraines. I was wondering if all this was related??

Chelsea,

Migraines and seizures can be comorbid conidtions. That means that a person has both conditions, but niether is the cause of the other.

Whether a pituitary tumor impacts Migraines or seizures depends on many things including the size of the tumor.

I'd love to be able to give you a firm answer, but the only person who can do that is a doctor who can review your and your family's medical history, discuss your symptoms with you, and conduct a complete examination. Nobody can answer this via the Internet.

I don't know if you'll be able to find one doctor to treat both your Migraines and seizures. You may end up with two different doctors. If that happens, you have the right to insist that the confer with each other about your treatment, AND that they include you in their discussions.

The best pace to start may well be with a Migraine specialist. It's possible that you can find one willing to treat your seizures too, but I can't really promise that. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? To look for a specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please let me know how things go?

Good luck,

Teri
