Q: I had to quit taking Maxalt because I take an anti-depressant Effexor XR...has this happened to you?

Maxalt had been helping me for several years. As soon as I felt a migraine coming on it would almost always stop it. It was a blessing. Then my doctor informed me I couldn't take it with any SSRI. She won't prescribe it anymore. What can I take for migraines now?  I've just been suffering through it for several months now. Has this happened to you? I've had migraines and depression for years.

Boomy,

This is, of course, something you and your doctor must decide. I'm still taking triptans with Effexor XR. The FDA advisory on this didn't say that they shouldn't be prescribed, but that they should be prescribed with caution, and patients should know to report certain symptoms immediately if they occur.

Perhaps you could read about this for yourself, then discuss it with your doctor again. There's a report on this along with a link to the FDA advisory in Antidepressants, Triptans, and Serotonin Syndrome.

Hope this helps,

Teri
