Q: My 16 yr. old son was diagnosed with Hemiplegic Migraines 8 weeks ago.

This was after a complete cervical spine and brain MRI done due to weakness on his right side that has afflicted him since a football concussion last year. We didcovered his nagging weakness on his right side was profound when we had him tested in May. Upon the diagnosis in June, he started a regimen of Magnesium and B-2 supplements and a program to strengthen his right side. The neurologist did not see any reason why he should not continue with his sports activities. He continued to participate in football, noticing numbness and weakness on his right side toward the end of the most strenuous workouts. He also went through basketball and track(discus and shot put) last year only occasionally mentioning he felt a little weaker on his right side. He went through a full week of football two-a-day practices with no problems, then had his right side lock-up last Saturday. He took himself out of practice yesterday with numbness and tingling. We immediately consulted the team physician, who is also our personal doc, and the neurologist who diagnosed him. We just started 25 mg of Aventyl/Pamelor daily. Today, he sat out of practices, and rested. He collapsed on the floor about noon, his right side completely numb and tingling.

There are a million questions in our minds now. This has obviously trancended his sports activities, although he wants to find a way to continue.  His neurologist is concerned about the events of the day, as is our physician. They are both seeking more info and I expect we will be visiting another Neurologist or neurosurgeon soon. He is a talented athlete, but did we error in allowing him to continue to participate? Is it a wait and see what the medication and events bring? Certainly there are more important things in life than high school sports.

Hi Sport,

I'm sorry to hear about your son, Hemiplegic Migraine can be difficult to diagnose and treat, but it can be done. The most important thing I can say here is to see an expert who treats this condition and it may not be a neurologist. Neurologists are fine doctors, but treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy it is hard for them to be experts in one area. Migraine specailists are just that - experts in one area - ours - Migraine disease and headaches. It is especially imperative to be treated by an expert when you have a rare form of Migraine disease like Hemiplegic Migraine.

We maintain a list of Migraine specialists who are recommended by patients or by Migraine specialists I know and trust. Hopefully, you'll find one there. Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.  Also take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special?

Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics has lots of vital information to get you started. I hope it helps. Good luck
