Q: Could a back/neck specialist find a reason for migraines? I have scoleosis/osteo in my back.

I have had migraines for around 20 years and have been on antidepressants of all kinds, epilepsy drugs, you name it.  I have been on the MAOI Marplan for a year and a half although the RX info says one should only stay on it for a few weeks then ween off.  Yet my doctor wants to INCREASE the dosage.  But this medicine doesn't work - I still get about 3 severe migraines a week and am on disability because of them.  I have scholeosis and osteoporosis in my midback - could a neck/back specialist (bone doctor) help me?

Hi Hurting,

Migraine are a genetic neurological disease thought to be caused by overactive neruons in our brains and genetics. What would a "back/neck specialist" be doing for you? If you are willing to invest your time and money to see a specialist, may I suggest you see the expert in our area - a Migraine specialist. You see, a bone doctor is an expert in bones. He treats all kinds of bones all day, every day, but not Migraines or headaches. You really want the expert to treat you.

A Migraine specialist treats one disease Migraines and headaches. They devote their entire practice treating patients with this condition - ours. Since your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this helps,

Nancy
