Q: Does anyone know what kind of Doctor I should see that will help with visual disturbances?

The problem is occurring in the brain,(I've seen Optometrist's which say my eyes are fine) and my vision is very static like, when I look at a blank wall or in the sky it's all lines and black "haze", I see lines, major auras(which are different then the migraine auras I usually suffer from).

This intense visual problem came out of no-where on sept.29th,2009 (I was on topamax at the time), and have since been taken off...but I still suffer. I also had a traumatic brain injury 10yrs ago. I'm not sure which is causing the problem but there has to be some kind of specialist that can help!? I know of one Dr. in Valencia, CA but he is very expensive and I was just wondering if anyone had feedback what these visual disturbances are caused by? I know it's something in the way my brain is processing my visual info. I need help!!

Sorry you're having such problems. This must be pretty frightening.

It may take seeing more than one doctor to sort this out. Topamax can cause some vision issues, some of them permanent. You can read more about that in Potential Vision Issues with Topamax. To rule out issues with your eyes, you need to see an ophthalmologist. Ophthalmologists are better trained to diagnose and treat deseases and other conditions of the eyes than optometrists are. Ophthalmologists are MDs who specialize in the eyes.

It's possible that these disturbances are Migraine aura, but different from the aura you've experienced before. If your doctor isn't able to help, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this helps. Will you please keep me posted on what you find out and how you're doing?
