Q: I am experiencing flare up migraines again

A little background on me. I have had my left temporal lobe removed because of epilepsy in '95 and the migraines began at that time. They were under control by usage of various prescription medications. The most recent one I used was called Migranal and this only worked for a total of about three months if that. The migraines seemed to be active during the changing of the barometer however now we are noticing that was not the case, there is something else going on. Unfortunately what it is we're not sure.

I have visited my neurologist once to discuss this issue. During the month of September the migraines were active to where I could do nothing but keep ice on the left side of my head until the current narcotic I am taking kicks in. I am now taking Tramadol which relieves the edge.

What I am wondering now is if there is a possibility of bone spurs from the brain surgery causing these flare ups to be so viscious. Has anyone experienced something like this? I will be bringing this question up to my neurologist when I see him on the 30th but I was curious if someone has experienced this.

I haven't been spending a lot of time on the computer because it is difficult to look at the monitor for long periods. A last resort issue that was mentioned was trying the Botox-A because of the situation I am experiencing. I am not a normal patient as I said, my migraines are not genetic, they were developed from brain surgery.

At any rate, if there is a medical person on this board familiar with migraines I would be happy to speak with them further. I don't anticipate others being familiar with my situation but I took the chance on leaving a message

Sue Lynn,

Sorry I didn't see this before your neruologist visit. I hope he was able to give you some answers.

One think to keep in mind about Migranal and other Migraine abortives and pain medications is that using them more than two or three days in a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

I would think that bone spurs could aggrivate your situtaion. Hopefully, your neurologist has answered this. If you're still having problems and your doctor hasn't been able to help consider consulting a Migraine specialist. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please let us know how you're doing?
