Q: My insurance company has decided that I don't need all the medication prescribed by my doctor.

That is, when I used to get 16 shots a month of my Imitrex, I am now only getting 4! What do I do?

Mercury,

Your insurance company didn't decide you don't need the medication. They decided they're not going to pay for that much. It comes down to $$. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem.

Call and talk with someone at the insurance company. Sometimes, they'll pay for more if your doctor sends them a letter or if it's pre-authorized. You might also ask if they'd cover more doses if you used the tablets. I don't know if they work for you, but insurance companies typically cover more tablets than injections. You could also see if they have a formulary with apreferred triptan. That might also make a difference in how many doses per month are covered.

Is your insurance through your employer? If so, you can also talk with someone in human resources about this problem. They may be able to help you with it.

How many Migraines do you have in a month? If you're having three or more a month, are you and your doctor working to find an effective preventive regimen? That should always be a consideration.

Please let me know how this turns out? Good luck.

Thats alot of shots for a migraine. I suffer from migraine's too, ask your doctor about a preventative. Better yet, see a neurologist. The neurologist may be better able to help you get your migraine's under control. Which it doesn't sound like they are. In the meantime, ask about a preventative to go with your shots.
