Q: Migraines wt/strange symptoms

For the past year or so now, I will sometimes out of nowhere start having this funny feeling in my head and not be able to see straight for like ten minutes and then a migraine will start setting in and it will be so severe that a lot of times I get sick to my stomach, I can't do anything but just lay down. A couple of times this has been accompanied by the left side of my face, tongue, and arm going completely numb for fifteen minutes or so. Its scary when it happens. I also sometimes have this kind of burning sensation in my head, usually on the right side. And occasionally I just have these like extreme, sudden sharp pains in this one part of my head on the front right side. Its really debilitating and inconvenient and I am worried something is seriously wrong.

Hi PEACHY_1234,

One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis. To simplify matters and make it easier for people to get information and treatment, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Under ICHD-II, there is no diagnosis of "optical Migraine." We do see it used, but doctors use it differently, so it really doesn't tell anyone what type of Migraine you actually have. You can read more about this in Ocular, Optical, and Opthalmic Migraines, Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics and The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this helps.

Nancy
