Most Migraine specialists recommend 300mg per day of Coenzyme Q10 if they recommend it for their patients. They also recommend that it be in geltab form as it's less effective if it's powdered to make tablets or capsules. B2 is the only B vitamin that's consistently recommended for Migraine, and it's generally recommended at 400mg per day.

Magnesium is another story. There just isn't a concensus of which type of magnesium to use or how much. That recommendation varies a great deal from doctor to doctor.

As for the combination products -- I haven't seen one of them with CoQ10 that isn't powdered. Also, quite a few doctors do not recommend those products because if they help, you don't really know which part is helping or if it's the combination -- so you might be taking something that's not doing you any good.

Above all, we should always talk with our doctors before taking any supplements. Please see Supplements for Migraine - They ARE Drugs for more information.

Welcome again,

Teri

I have been a migraineur for 30 years and I am now under the care of a great neurologist.  I am 49, female and also 130 lbs. He immediately took me off Topamax and put me on a supplement called "Migravent"  It has CoQ10, magnesium, B2 and butterbur.

It has been a miracle "drug" for me!!!!!!  I kid you not.  Not only have my chronic daily headaches disappeared, but one day when I thought I was getting a migraine -- it never developed.  I did not take any supplements prior to this --- I was always afraid of getting headaches from them!  So you could say I was a good trial for this product.  My only hope is that it lasts forever.  But I am a bit cynical so I think at some point the effectiveness might wear off.

You can get this product through Amazon!  Oh, I take 2 a day -- directions say 2-3 a day.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply!!  I found this neurologist through the National Headache Foundation's website.  I selected him because he had extra "schooling" on headaches specifically.  You have to become a member of the foundation to view their stuff --- but I get a ton of good advice from them.

My Dr's name is James W Banks III and he is located in St Louis MO.

I spoke to the nurse in his office the other day about Migravent and she told me that their success rate was a solid 50% with all the patients they put this on.   The key is to stick with it for at least 3 months.. I saw results with in a week, myself.  But keep in mind that I take absolutely no other vitamins or supplements!  So I feel that I have nothing else in my system to counter the effects of Migravent.  Just my two cents -- not anything they told me!

Good Luck!

Dr. Banks has been recommended by several of our members now. Did you know you can look for a specialist here on our site too? We maintain a listing of patient recommended specialists HERE.
