Q: I am currently taking propranolol er 80mg at bedtime I also take midrin and loratab as needed which

is just about every day. I will wake up with a headache and I will go ahead and take something right away. I feel relief for a while but then the systems return thinking it could be a sinus headache I'll take something for my sinus'. This is a daily thing and I'm so tired of having to go get shots every 2 to3 weeks a mounth. Is there any one in the South Carolina that could help me. I also feel I have taken everything out there. I use to take excedrin migraine but after having gastric by-pass I had to stop taking that so not to develop ulcers, I really don't know what to do. When I was 40 I went to see a Doctor in Atlanta Ga. and I was told I would out grow my migraines that did not make any sense to me at all. If there is anything I can do or any place I can go please let me know.

Thank You,

Cheryl Boggs

Hi Cheryl,

I bet you are tired of getting shots! Sometimes we may create a situation for ourselves without knowing it called Medication Overuse Headache, MOH. This can happen if we take certain OTC and/or prescription medications more than two to three days a week. One of the problems with MOH is no preventive medication on earth with work if we are in this cycle. The only way to stop MOH is to stop the offending medication.  Continue reading more here: Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires. And then read: Transformed Migraine - Risk Increased by Some Medications.

A Migraine specialist would be the way to go now.  You may have to travel a bit, but it will be well worth your time. We have a list of patient recommended Migraine specialists you can see by clicking HERE. Good luck

Hi Cheryl!

I also suffer from Migraine Headaches and just started to take Propranolol, but am only taking 20mg, 2 times per day and think that is a very low dose for Migraines. I was on Celexa for Depression and was told that it would help with Migriane headaches and took it for a few months then stopped, well i thought it wasn't working but the day after I stopped the headaches came on Twice as bad!!! So I started taking it again and after a few days on 20mg the headaches have been cut in Half! So Im going to up it to 40mg and see how that goes. Anyways, an anti-depressant might be an option. Also try for a couple days staying away from any dairy products, you might be sensitive to dairy and is causing a buildup of mucus in your sinuses! Try taking Vitamin B6, Niacin, and Blueberries when you start feeling a Migraine or one comming on, I have just started taking these 3 and I REALLY seems to work wonders!!!!!!! Now I have only done this for a few days, BUT, I really think these 3 in combination is a cure!!!!!!! Anyways, If you have come across anything that has cured your Migraines, PLEASE share it with me!!!!!!!!!!

I am 55 (female) and have always had migraines every so often. However, lately they have been coming about once a week.  My doctor knew nothing, so I asked for Propranolol.  I'm very sensitive to drugs, so I'm only at 10mg before going to bed.  It's now been 3 months and I've only had 3 headaches in 3 months, and only one that has been as bad as those prior to the Propranolol.  The other two have been much less intense.   I hope to spread the word!  Well worth a try for ANYONE... even this low a dose!
