Q: menstration and migraines

I've been taking a seasonal birth control that regulates my period to every three months to help cut back on my migraines. But every three months I get some of the worst migraines I've ever experienced...true true migraines where I'm vomitting from the pain.

I've taken 5 maxalt in the past three days. I really worry about medication over use but I just cannot tolerate the pain of these headaches. it worries me that it takes so much medication to get them to go away and that they still come back every day. Is there anything besides birth control that can help regulate my migraines when I'm menstrating - hormones or something?

Hi Nebula,

There is some evidence that Frova taken around menses may be helpful. I will give you some information you can read about that in this Ask the Clinician question; Prevention of menstrual Migraines.

Migraine Disease, Menstrual Migraines, and Hysterectomy is another bit of information that may be helpful.

Good luck

Nancy

Thank you! I have an appointment in the morning and I will be sure to ask her about Frova
