Q: day 4 & all symptoms gone but left side numbness/weeakness

how long can numbness/weakness on one side last? First time hemiplegic attack caused numbness & weakness to last days. All other symptoms gone. Was admitted to hosp. to rule out stroke- all extensive tests negative so it is just a migraine attack. Still feel foggy. Having pt & ot daily at home now. Has anyone had a long period of numbness/weakness and does it just go away or gradually return? PT & OT is helping regain movement range so I don't stiffen.

Please let me know your paralysis or sever numbness/tingling stories. I can't use my hand right now and need a walker but they say I will get better.

Thanks

TRing,

In an excellent presentation at an American Headache Society scientific meeting, data was presented that showed these symptoms can, in rare cases, last for months. Hopefully, they won't last that long for you.

Several of our discussion forum members have hemiplegic Migraine, and you might want to go there and get feedback from some of them. You'll need to register again once there because it's a separate membership database, but you can use the same member name, email address, and password that you used here. You can find our forum at http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums.

I also posted a note to the forum asking members to come answer this question.

Good luck,

Teri

Hi!  I have familial hemiplegic migraine and have experienced long term numbness and weakness in the past.  My longest "episode" lasted about 6 weeks, and I have also had one last about 2 weeks.  My longest episode was also my first episode, so I know how scary it can be to not know what's going on with your body!  Hopefully yours will begin to subside very soon!  Over the past year or so, I have identified many triggers and dealt with some underlying physical conditions... Now a typical episode for me lasts less than a day and is actually "manageable," meaning I can pretty much go about my day as usual, I'm just a bit "off."  Make sure to ask your doctor about natural treatments and supplements.  I (and others) have found that the addition of a high dose magnesium supplement has decreased the frequency of the migraines significantly.  There are many other treatments as well... I hope you feel better soon! Smile

I have FHM, and the longest my numbness/weakness lasted was 4 months.  The numbness (feels like the left side of my body is novacained) usually lasts much longer than the weakness.  My brain usually feels foggy for weeks after a severe migraine episode.  Good luck!

I almost hate to answer this, but my left-sided numbness & weakness has lasted 9 months so far.  It is getting better gradually and has gotten significantly better in the past week after seeing a migraine specialist and being started on verapamil three weeks ago, but for me the weakness seems to be lasting a very long time, especially in my left arm.  The fogginess and forgetfulness in nearly compltely gone ... thank goodness!
