Q: Average headaches and susceptibility for just headaches for someone with a Migraineur parent

Is there an average for how often a 'normal' person gets headaches?  My 18 year old son just started keeping a diary so I could try to get an idea of what is going on with his headaches.  Would he be more susceptible to 'just' headaches since I get Migraines?

Hi, Puppet!

No, there isn't an average for how often a "normal" person gets headaches, but they shouldn't be frequent.

Since you have Migraine disease, your son has a 50% chance of inheriting it. If there's a history of Migraine on his father's side of the family too, that increases to 75%. Your having Migraine shouldn't genetically predispose him to other headache disorders. You're sure these are headaches and not Migraines? Remember that the headache doesn't have to be severe to be part of a Migraine attack. Does he have any other symptoms? Nausea, sensitivity to light or sound?

If he hasn't already, it's time to see his doctor. OK?

Please keep me posted?

Thanks, Teri.  My MIL used to get Migraines too so I guess his chances are pretty high.  I am believing he has Migraines, but hoping for just headaches.  His short time diary is definitely showing frequent headaches and other Migraine symptoms.  While he is on break from school, I just gave him your book to read so we can talk about things in more detail.  I'm glad he can go to my doctor and doesn't have to go through a lot of the incompetent doctors like many of us have done.  Time to get tough as I'm already getting friction from someone about his headaches.  Sigh.

Thanks for the extra information, Puppet.

Please let me know if I can do anything for the two of you?

if you get migraines then he is at risk as well. and not all people have the same migraine symptoms and triggers.

i would keep the diary, rate each one, listing all symptoms, and anything he has eaten in the last day or so.

both you and he might find it intresting as to the patterns. and even if there isn't one ( and don't forget things like the weather) his doctor will still find this useful.

my problem ( which i had said for years was the root cause) was my sinus problems. most of my headaches were brought on by the weather. took me years of seeing doctors and begging for help before i finally saw an ENT. turns out i was BORN with the problem.

now happily, unless i eat something that triggers one, i have them better  controlled ( almost a month now) .

good luck!

Thanks, Chickie.  I have him keeping a detailed diary now, but I'll have to remind him to keep track of the weather and the like too.  I'm real glad your sinus surgery has helped you so much!  I hope you keep up the great success.
