Q: I am on Topamax 100mg for 5 yrs. Great success, no migraines in the past yr, but memory is bad, loss of words etc. I also have ADD- take Adderall XR 40mg. Want to stop the topa will my memory improve?

I was much smarter before the topamax, and I am in grad school now and I don't even think the adderal is working as well as it used to because of the topamax. I have read a lot of tapering off blogs and I take 50mg twice a day, I started at 25mg twice a day. Should I start with 50mg once a day or 25mg twice a day for the week or so? Will the cognitive functioning of my brain improve, or have I been on this drug for too long?

Hi GradMsn,

I'm so glad to hear Topamax was a success for you, however since you seem to be experiencing some unwanted side effects, the very first thing needed is a conversation with your doctor about tapering off your dose. Reading blog posts is NOT the way to safely taper off any medication. I am being a bit blunt here, but if you don't taper off Tompamax correctly, you run the risk of having complications - like seizures even in people who haven't had them before - from tapering it incorrectly, especially since you have been on this medication for a long time. This medication has a half life of 21 hours and may take a while to leave your system.

Please contact your doctor for a taper schedule, you can find more information on Tompamax dosing HERE.

Good luck

Nancy
