Q: I'm fourteen and have a constant headache. What is it?

Nine months ago I had an accident at a softball game, where the softball hit me in the eye, causing a severe cut. We got it glued back together, and the doctors said therre wasn't anything wrong with my head, but a week later I started to get headaches. Apparently, it was just sinuses, so I took the medication and got better.but then a couple of days after that, the headaches came back, and slightly worse. I got some new medication for it, but it didn't do much. Mom got worried and took me to get my head scanned. There isn't any damage to my head, and there isn't anything wrong with my sinuses, but the headaches haven't gone away. They were only twice a week or so, but now they never seem to stop. Most of the time it's just dull and annoying, but sometimes it'll be a sharp stab a little above my scar, and it causes me to loose my balance. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when it happens. The worst is when I have a constant, severe pain. Most of the time this happens at night, right before bed, but other times it's random. My parents think it's just because I'm fourteen and going through 'changes'. But if that's so, how come I'm the only one that's going through this?

CatGirl,

Even if imaging studies don't show any "damage," post-traumatic headaches can be caused by accidents such as yours. Please have your parents take a look at this artice - Post-Traumatic Headache - The Basics - and make another appointment with your doctor.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Also, tell your parents about this site and that they're welcome to come read and ask questions.

Welcome again,

Please take Teri's advice and get your parents to take you to a specialist. You're far too young to have to just put up with nasty headaches.
