Q: Complex Migraine: Is it possible to suffer the symptoms of a complex migraine without having the actual headache?

I had twitching in my right thumb, then my arm went numb and weak. The numbness/tingling traveled up my arm, shoulder and partially to my face, my speech was slightly impaired and I was a bit incoherent for about 15 minutes. After these symptoms, I had a sudden sharp pain in my head lasted only a couple of minutes.  Is this common for a complex migraine?

Migraine attacks have four possible phases, including a headache phase. They can occur without the headache phase. When that happens, they're described as "silent" or "acephalgic." For more on this, see Acephalgic or Silent Migraine – The Basics.

That said, the symptoms you describe could have been a Migraine, BUT they also could have been something else, including a stroke or TIA. If this is the first time you've experienced an episode like this one, or if it's unusual for you, you should see your doctor, especially if you've never been diagnosed with Migraine.

One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis. To simplify matters and make it easier for people to get information and treatment, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Under ICHD-II, there is no diagnosis of "complex Migraine." You can read more about the importance of a correct diagnosis in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Welcome again,

Teri
