Q: Migraines and TIA's

Last weekend I suffered from the most frightening episode I have ever had.  I was at work I got really dizzy, passed out.  When I came to I had numbness in my left side that lasted 48 hours and chest paid that lasted for 24 hours.

The thing is I didn't have a migraine to begin with.  After I came to I had a rush of pain that I thought was never going to end.  EMS was called I was taken to the hospital and was told it might have been a TIA but they couldn't be sure. If I'm correct these are ministrokes (and they couldn't be sure?!?)

What do I tell my boss. I'm not sure if this will ever happen again.  What are the chances of this accurring again? I'm frightened. I don't ever want another episode like that again.  And the rumor at work is that I had a "breakdown"  no one understands what I'm going through. I've had migraines for nearly 25 years and no doctor can figure out my case.  And now this happens.  It's the straw that broke the camel's back. Please tell me you have some answers - will it happen again?  and if so will they be frequent?

Hi Misschif,

I'd really like to help you with your question, but it cannot be answered online. A diagnosis can be provided only by a doctor who can review your medical and your family's medical history, discuss your symptoms, and conduct a complete exam in person.

Now having said that, if your doctor isn't able to help you and he sounds like he isn't, it may be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. It's thought to be caused by genetics and overly active neurons in the brain. There really isn't anyway to tell you boss that you won't have a Migraine attack again, if that is what happened. The best thing, in addition to see a Migraine specialist and preventive regime, is Trigger identification and management. You may have some triggers that you can avoid, thus preventing Migraines brought on by those triggers. Do you know what any of your triggers are? When working to identify triggers one of the best tools is a good Migraine diary. You can read more about this and download a free diary workbook in our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary.  Managing Migraine - Migraine Trigger Foods is another article you may be interested in.

For purposes of treatment, learning about your Migraines, being able to get care if you're away from home, etc., you need a full diagnosis of what type of Migraine you have. You can read more about this in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Nancy, the doctors at hospital I was taken to did a whole bevy of tests.  The neurologist there specializes in strokes.  Aftr looking over my records he told me that  I had all the signs an symptoms of a TIA but that it wasn't a TIA. because they couldn't find the blood clot (which after 3 days in the hospital on blood thinners) could have gone on it's own by the time they got to that test.

The good news is that while mr dr.has realized my migraines are more complicated that her scale of knowleedge - she has asked for help from a doctor on youur list - Dr. Carmen Wilson - I go down to her headaache clinic for a week starting May 10.  And they plan to work together on my causse to see what they can do for me.   I also just started the low Tyramine diet on the NHF website hoping it help in managing the migraine.  Work from the inside out.  Thank you for your help and support.

They come at a much needed time

Great! You are in good hands with Dr.Carmen Wilson. I met her at one of the scientific conferences I went too and she is very nice.

Let me know how your visit goes, ok?

I don't know if this will help you at all but I thought I would share with you whats been going on with me and what I'm trying. I started having migraines last June that started with the numbness and passing out with loss of vision.  I started taking 800mg of magnisium and 2 b complex twice a day. As of October I was symptom free except for the pain. I hope that helps. Also make sure they do a spinal tap to rule out cranial hypertention.  You really need to be your own advocate. Make them search its your life not theres. Also remember they are practicing medicine and they are not God. Good luck
