Q: Heat nand hemiplegic migraine

After a year of being told that I was having TIA's and or had MS, I was diagnosed with Hemiplegic migraines.  This is my first post diagnosis summer.  I have been basically worthless to my family, went on disability, and am feeling still confused.  Does hot weather cause the migraine activity to worsen?  I had gotten so much better and able to do things and then heat happened!  On most days I just sit on the couch and tremble 'cause my balance is crappy, I am dizzy, I am weak and clumsy.  Today, my penny-pincher husband finally turned on the AC and I am fine!  My brain works, my vision is clearing and I can walk around the house with out holding on to the furniture.  I am on Verapamil 420mg.  Do I maybe need more during the summer?  Thanks!

Hi Wendy,

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. We have lots of information here on Migraines in general and a bit on Hemiplegic Migraine you can take a look at in this article: Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics.

Many things can trigger a Migraine for people, some are sensitive to foods, smells, changes in sleep pattern and even weather changes. Could it be the changing of the weather, or you can you tell if the heat actually triggers an attack? One way to find out, which I'm doing now, is to keep a Migraine diary - even after the attack occurs. Our Migraine diary is free to download or you can look around for an app for your smart phone, pc or laptop. I just wrote up a bit about my summer Migraines you may find helpful: Click here to find out more!My Summer Migraines.

Good luck

Nancy

I have tried going outside and within 5 mins.  I get the shakes and get clumsy.  When I go back into the AC it takes twice as long as I spent outside to recover.  I have an appt. with my neurologist in September.  I am going to email him about this development and see what he recommends.  I have read many mof the articles on this site about HM and have learned a lot.  Thanks!
