Q: CAFERGOT NOW NOT AVAILABLE IN QUEENSLAND !!!

Hi,  I am not sure if you are aware or not, but here in Queensland a tablet called  "CAFERGOT" used for migraines has been taken of the market, after speaking with the company that was having it made overseas for them, they explained to me why it was now not available, and that really there is nothing to replace it with, I decide to see if I would be able to obtain it from overseas.   Is there any information or advise you may be able to give me?  The person I spoke with told me many people have also made inquires about this.  Any advise or information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Karen,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

We're getting reports of brand name Cafergot being scarce in the US too. Here, there are two companies making generics of it, Westward and Mikart. I'd suggest you check with your pharmacist and see if any generics are avaialble there.

As for having the generics shipped to you, I'm not sure of the legalities of it, but I doubt that it's going to work out well. It's illegal to sell these medications without a prescription, and I'm not sure of the legalities of a US pharmacy filling prescriptions written by doctors from other companies.

Wish I had more information for you, but the info about the generics is all I've been able to find out. Certainly, your doctor or pharmacist should be able to advise you now that you know about the generics and who makes them.

I do hope this is of some help.

Welcome again,

Teri

Thanks Teri,   I have been to my Doctor today and no there isnt any generics here in queensland.   And as for Cafergot there isnt any similar med.....But there is Cafergot Suppository which my doctor is saying is still available at the moment...here in queensland.  So here's hoping it works the same.  My doctor is saying it is a little stronger than the tablet form and works quicker as it gets into your blood strem faster.  Suppository I wasnt keen on but I know I cant do without the cafergot.  I would end up in hospital every month at that time of my cycle with a migraine.  I havent yet worked out my way around this site and do hope others from Australia see this post as there are many here the manufacture said that were also trying to find an alternative to cafergot.  So here's hoping that these work and that others see this post.  Thank you very much Teri for replying and your advise this was very much appreciated.

Karen,

You're welcome. Sorry you're having so much trouble getting the medication you need.

This may well be a "dumb" question, but have you tried any of the triptans -- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, etc.? Imitrex is even available in the generic form, sumatriptan now. I ask because I really don't know how much longer some of the ergotamine medications like Cafergot are going to be around.

I too was horrified to find Cafergot was no longer available. I have used it in a cocktail with soluble Aspro for many years to help with my cluster headaches. Help is at hand.

I went to my on line Yellow Pages and searched for compounding pharmacies in my part of NSW. 3 within a half hour drive, Called the  nearest, "No problem, have about 6 customers already that I provide with Cafergot, held up till the end of the week when new raw material arrives".  All he needs is some advance notice and a valid doctor's script.    Price  $30 for 20 tabs which is actually cheaper than the $33.60 which I have been paying for the fully imported stuff.    Good luck

I also used to take cafergot tablets with very little nausea, dizziness etc.  Last night I took a suppository and ended up very dizzy and vomiting for about an hour.  It was actually worse than the migraine.  The migraine went but I had to call my mum because I was so scared of the severe side effect.  I have tried the triptans but they do not work effectivley for me.  So I would love the details too - please!!!

Hi has anyone given you a compound chemist name or address??  As I am in the same boat in Victoria and tried the suppository with the same results as yourself and would love to find out where to get it again.

I too am suffering without Cafergot. It gave me my life back. The Cafergot suppositories have terrible side effects for me and are as bad as my migraines - vomiting, dizziness, aching legs++ and very painful genitals. If anyone can find an alternative, I would be very interested.
