Q: Nervious about taking a med. Help

I asked my doc for something I could take for anxiety.  For times like on vacation, not being in your own home, being in places you are not sure how your body is going to handle. Times when a migraine comes on and you may not be able to handle it very well.  She gave me Ativan.  Should I be cauious with this med?  What can I expect from this med?

Chrissy,

Ativan is in the benzodizepine family. It may make you sleepy. Should you be caurious with it? Well, yes, we should be cautious with any medication. Be sure to read the patient information that comes with your prescription and keep it for future reference. Remember that you can call your doctor or pharmacist whenever you have questions about medications that are prescribed for you.

There's something I do that I think would work well for you. Over they years, I've gotten into the habit of taking a notepad and pen to every doctor's appointment. When a new medication is prescribed, there are questions that I ask and write the answers on my notepad --

• when to take the medication

• should it be taken with or without food

• what I can expect it to do

• what the potential side effects are

Hope this helps,

Teri
