Q: I have had a medtronic device implanted in my brain about one and one half years ago.

The Docs used a "paddle" device which did not work. Before that they used a similar Medtronic device and the electrical "leads" fell off.  They removed it. But it DID work. For three months I had NO migraines (I've had daily migraines for 9 years since I hit 50.  I thought they would end then, but they got worse).  I was devastated. A year after the first device fell out, they implanted a "paddle" device, which was supposed to stay on longer.  It has, but it never worked from the very beginning.  We have fooled around with the setting to no avail.  I want to take it out but I have lost my medical insurance and these docs refuse to take it out because of this.  What can I do?  Am I in any kind of danger if the wires break (they did the last time),or fall off.

Thank you,

Laura Larrett

Laura,

At this time, NONE of these devices is FDA approved for the treatment of Migraine. They are still in clinical trials. Most insurance companies won't pay for them at all. One of the biggest problems occurring in the clinical trials is the lead slippage that you experienced with the first one.

I don't really know if leaving the current device in place presents any danger. Did the doctor who implanted it have anything to say about this?

Try conctacting Medtronic Neuromodulation Patient Services for information and assistance. That phone number is 800-510-6735. They're open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Time.

Good luck,

Teri
