Q: Hospitalization for attack?

recently been asked by a few people if I've ever been hospitalized for my migraines.  Assuming that's all that's going on, I guess I never considered the possibility to run to the ER for an attack no matter how severe or long lasting they have been.

What would be a reason or w hat would be sure sign that I should / should have gone in for a migraine attack?

Hi JadedAngel

Well, anytime we have the "worst headache of our life" is something we need to take very seriously. If you do exeperience the "worst head pain of your life", please seek medical help immediately as this could be a serious health issue.

Another reason Migraineurs get medical help from hospitals is that their Migraine may have been going on longer than 72 hours, and the cycle can't be broken. This could be a potential problem called Status Migrainous, meaning anytime a single Migraine lasts 72 hours or longer with less than a solid four-hour pain-free period, while awake, is termed status Migrainous. You should see your doctor or go to the emergency room if a Migraine lasts that long. See Status Migrainous - The Basics for more information.

Other times people have tried different medications and their Migraine specialists feel it is time to try another protocool to break an intractable (not responding to medications) Migraine cycle. We have some good information on IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

wow I didn't know that.  I keep reading the 72hr is the threshold marker.  I've had migraines last 2-3 weeks at a time, missing work, trips to see my nephew out of state, movie extra auditions, everything.  I just figured it's something i have to deal with and "ride it out".  never considered needing medical assistance as i really did see it being something that urgent.  I am feeling so dumb and clueless right now about a disease i've had for many years.  I had no idea how serious it really is and can be.  Thank you
