Q: Is there a preventative medic for exertion heat induced headaches

Is there any preventative medication for exertion / heat induced headaches that does not impair concentration. I race motorcycles and must remain alert obviously. I exert myself physically while racing and this usually results in me getting very hot and then a headache behind the forehead starts. Wetting my hair and a wet head band or cap helps relieve the discomfort but it does not cure the headache. I am 57 years of age and have suffered with this problem since juniour school sport. The usual process is i) play sport ii) exert myyself iii) get hot iv) headache starts v) headache becomes severe behind forehead vi) lead to vomitting vii) sleep viii) wake up drowsy and exhausted. I'm looking for a cure and or some control in the meantime. Thank you

Hi Dave,

Have you spoken with a doctor about this yet? It is really, really important to have an accurate diagnosis so you can have the right treatment plan, learn about your Migraines, and be able to get care if you're away from home. This article, The Type of Migraine Does Matter, may be helpful.

Now, having said all that, are you staying hydrating while you race your motocycles? Dehydration can trigger a Migraine for some people. There is a type of headache called Primary Exertional Headache (PEH) that about 10% of the population gets, mostly men and can be triggered by any type of exercise. Continue reading,  Primary Exertional Headache - The Basics for more information.

I hope this helps,

Nancy
