Does taking Methadone for severe back pain relate to increase (almost daily) mirgaines?

My son in law was injured in the Army.  He received a serious back injury and has had several surgeries on his back.  He now has neck problems in addition to his back problems.  He does not sleep more than 20 minutes at a time throughout the night.  He has been on many pain killers (prescribed) and most recently was put on Methadone.  He is experiencing loss of some vision, daily severe migraines and personality changes.  He crys constantly.

Debra,

It's possible, but not probable, that the Methadone could be causing medication overuse headache, aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

You mentioned other things that are common Migraine triggers. His sleep pattern could well be a Migraine trigger as could crying. Plus, for some, neck problems can trigger Migraines. I'm sure he's already seeing more than one doctor, but if his doctors can't answer the Migraine issue, I suggest he see a Migraine specilist for help. If he needs advice finding one, see our listing of Patient Recommended Specialists.

Good luck to you and your family,

Teri
