Q: I was told at the ER that I was just looking to get narctics for my migraines. Really?

I see a headache specialist out of town and have a rescue med, but my migraines are so frequent, I run out of it about a week before I can refil it, then I'm screwed.  I have been through tons of different preventatives, that don't do much, and have pretty much used all the traditional stuff with mixedf results. I usually wake up with a migraine in full swing, so early action isn't an option.  Currently I am taking compazine at stage 1, migranol when it gets worse, which works pretty well, and cambia when its worse. I've started magnezium supplements (migrileif) If someone could get these under control, or have any ideas, please help.  I don't like being called a drug addict.  If Torodal worked I'd be fine.

Hi jocharanna,

It sounds like it is time to talk with your headache specialist about your preventive plan. If you are visiting the ER frequently,  and running out of rescue medications,  the preventive medication is not doing its job and it is time to look for another option or increase the dose of the preventive medication. What are you taking for prevention, may I ask?

You mention that you wake with a Migraine. Many times people who wake with Migraines may have issues with their sleep. Have you ever had a sleep study? That may be one direction to take, we have a video on this topic that may be helpful; Migraines and Sleep.

Do you know what any of your triggers are? Trigger identification and management is an important part of Migraine management and preventing Migraines. You may have some triggers that you can avoid, like getting dehydrated and getting enough sleep, thus preventing Migraines brought on by those triggers. Do you know what any of your triggers are? When working to identify triggers one of the best tools is a good Migraine diary. You can read more about this and download a free diary workbook in our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary.

I know sometimes it can feel like we've tried every drug known to man to treat our Migraines, but that really is not the case. There are over 100 medications used to treat Migraine and when you add up the combinations, that number goes way up. Don't give up, I understand how frustrating it is to try different medications! When you get a chance take a look at Migraine preventive medications – too many options to give up! for more information.

Magnesium is often used for Migraine prevention as is CoQ10 Enzyme, feverfew (not to be used by pregnant women or may become pregnant) melatonin, vitamin B2, lecithin, butterbur - brand Petadolex and 5-HTP (please check carefully with your doctor because of interactions with medications like triptans and others).

Keep us posted on how you are feeling, OK?
