Does hypertension relate to headaches?

I have fought chronic headaches, both migraine and tension for thirty years.  Recently, I was diagnosed with hypertension, after not seeing an MD for 5 years.  For the first week or so, after filling my scripts, I felt much better and I was hopeful.  That was about one month ago.  I have had a constant headache, sometimes about a 5 but it has eased off to about a 2-3, since April 16.  My husband, who is a retired Nurse Practictioner, took my blood pressure on Sunday. The diastolic was 98.  He gave me some samples of a hypertension med but it's not helping; or perhaps it is too soon?  If things don't change by tomorrow, I will make an appt to see my MD on Friday.  I am looking for suggestions of meds that helped with the hypertension headache in particular.  Also, am I nuts?    Of course, my husband has suggested that my blood pressure may be high because I am coping with a chronic headache!  Ugh.

Barbara,

Make that doctor's appointment. You need to see your doctor and try to determine exactly the point your husband raised -- whether your blood pressure is causing you headaches or if the hypertension is because you're in pain.

Also, see Increased blood pressure and Migraines? from our Ask the Clinician column.

Good luck,

Teri
