Q: Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy Replacement (BHRT), has anyone had experience w/this treatment?

I recently found out about BHRT on tv show The Doctors, have an appt scheduled for a consult and testing, and was wondering if anyone has had any positive or negative experience with this type of treatment.   Thank you.

Remrulz,

I'm sorry nobody has replied to share their experiences. I'll tell you what I know from the experiences others have related to me though.

First, hormone therapy isn't likely to help unless the hormonal fluctuations of your cycle are a trigger for you.

Second, as with any other treatment, we respond very differently to hormonal therapies. BHRT has made things better for some, worse for others, and made no difference either way for still other Migraineurs.

Hope this helps a bit,

Teri

Hi Remrulz -

I'm answering here not as an expert but only from my own experience.  I have been on bio-identical HRT for about two years now. I did not go on it for Migraines, but to deal with hot flashes, anxiety, and other menopausal symptoms which I was having a very difficult time with.  The menopausal symptoms are completely gone and my average Migraine severity has decreased quite a bit.  The frequency is not any better.  Some, but not all, of my Migraines have always been hormonally related, and they grew much worse in peri-menopause.  As Teri said, some women seem to respond well and others not!

Good luck to you!

Megan,

Thank you for your response.  I am currently waiting for the lab results to find out where my hormone levels are.  I know some of my migraines are hormone related, like yours, but not all.  And the other menopausal symptoms I experience are many.  Actually there aren't many I don't suffer from so I'm glad to know of your positive experience with BHRT.

Hi, I've suffered with migraines since menses began, generally 1 or 2 headaches per year thru adulthood.  But as peri-menopause began the frequency increased to 4 headaches per month.  Three years ago I began bio-identical hormone therapy (bHRT).  While bHRT helped with most of my peri-menopausal symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, loss of libido, hot flashes, insomnia and mood swings, it has done little to decrease the number of migraines I suffer per month.  I do believe that the severity of the migraines has declined, however.  Whether from bHRT or becuase I've switched to sublingual Zomig, I am not certain.  When aura begins I immediately take three ibuprofen gel-caps, use the sublingual Zomig and head for a dark room to relax for 1/2 hour.  It took me years of trying different things to find this solution, and it is working like nothing else ever has.  But everyone responds differently to meds, and you may have to try some other combination.  I hope this information was helpful to you.  Good luck and good health!!

I started on BHRT as I was desperate to try anything. I am40 years old and I do not feel that my migraines have improved. I was on the progesterone/testosterone cream and with my insomnia I was just prescribed prometrium. I took it last night and I have been sick all day and cannot get rid of this migraine. The bad thing is the prometrium is very expensive-I have just been researching and found out that prometrium does cause side effects of dizziness, nausea, tiredness, migraine etc.! I am really annoyed that my doctor didn't advise me of this nor the pharmacist. I would never have purchased it. I am very sensitive and if their is a prescription that has side effects I will be the 1% that gets them....the cream I found was fine. I was quite tired the first month I took it but no dizziness or nausea.
