migraine medicines

I've been sufferering from migraine since 25 yrs. I am 32 yrs now. Earlier i used to take pain killers to get rid of migraine but latter on they become ineffective. Last year my doc put me on dose in summers ( Mar - Aug) as i get more frequent attacks in summers.

suminat 25mg (twice daily)
ciplar 20 ( thrice daily.)

later on after taking it about 3 monts, he gradually withdrawn the dose and made it suminat 25 (SOS).

Now this year as summers are again approaching i have to take one suminet 25(as sos) every alternate day.

Do you recomment taking suminet 25 as sos.
Your openion taking suminet for long span of time ( 4-5yrs) as sos.

Taking suminet as sos made my life changed and i am totally out of migraines.

I am afraid of taking suminat as sos due to any kind of side effects.

Please suggest.

MSK,

I'm not sure what you mean by sos. suminat (sumatriptan/Imitrex) is a Migraine abortive medication to be taken at the onset of a Migraine attack. It should not be taken more than two or three days a week because of it's potential to cause medication overuse headaches, aka rebound. (See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires.)

Do you still take the ciplar (propranolol)? If you have three or more Migraines a month, preventive medications such as ciplar are strongly recommended.

There are no studies about long-term use of sumatriptan, and I know of no reports of long-term problems.

Please discuss these issues with your doctor. He can explain your options to you.
