One evening, I had a visual disturbance which started as a very bright zigzag flashing curve and under that there was a patch of foggy blindness. The whole thing expanded. It lasted 15 minutes. Id been having severe headaches and stiff neck in the few days before. I had a mild headache afterwards. I felt dizzy for about an hour. The next day I felt v weak. Three members of my family have these episodes (my mother has no headache and my siblings do). Was my episode a migraine? If so, is the mini-pill safe to take?

These are excellent questions, but they're also questions that can only be answered in person by a doctor who can review your and your family's medical history, discuss your symptoms with you, and conduct a complete examination.
Your family members having similar issues may well point toward Migraine, but there are other possible causes for the symptoms, and those other causes need to be ruled out.
As for the mini-pill, that decision is probably going to be based on more than whether you have Migraine disease or not. Other risk factors you may have as well as the rest of your medical history need to be taken into account.
So, please see your doctor about these questons, and let us know how things turn out?
