Q: Has anyone had help with getting a prescription for a injectable pain control for when you have the

type of migraine that takes you to the ER for a shot to end the migraine attack.  I ask because for one I live out in the countryside and when I am not able to get to the ER it would be nice to know that I could have a injectable like they give you at the ER available at home for the emergency.  I do take replax and have injectable imitrex for migraine control but there are those times when I don't catch it in time and the migraine moves to the excruciating pain with vomiting. I do have percoset and pheragan in pill form but when I reach the stage of pain that causes vomiting I can't keep anything in my stomach.  I know that the doctors want to monitor the injectable medication they give me, but with my history(they can see my records) and how many times I have had to have the injectable pain meds in the ER I would think that there is someway a doctor would offer a solution for a patient that is experiencing this kind of suffering. And I pretty sure there is one of you out there that probably has the same experience as me.  I live in No. California and have not had too much help finding a good headache specalist, so if you know of one, I would love to know their name!

Thanks-Tracy

Tracy,

I have a prescription for injectable rescue medications to keep me out of the ER when my triptans fail. That didn't come about, however, until I'd been working consistently with a Migraine specialist for approximately three years.

Part of the problem is the DEA and their overly strict monitoring and questioning of the prescribing of such medications. Doctors typically and justifiably feel that they can only prescribe such injectables to patients with whom they have a long-standing relationship and patients who do not need them frequently.

I know how difficult it is to find a good specialist. Until recently, there wasn't one in my entire state. Check out our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Hope you find the hlep you need soon!

Teri

I know the type of migraine you are talking about I get those as well a trip to the ER is the only thing that helps for me also. I live in Louisiana and dont know of any doctor that will give injectable pain medicine. My neuro always say when it gets to that point I have to go to the ER. I cant even take Imitrex because I had a bad reaction years ago.

I've suffered for 14 years now and I am also looking for a migraine specialist to go to. I have found 3 in Dallas and have and appt next week with my neuro to see about a referral.

It would be nice if there was something they could give us a home so we dont have to keep going to the ER certainley with all of our mediacl history they have on file.

Good luck to you.

I suffer from hemiplegic migraine and I have pain medication at home. My neuro is very cool about pain med and doesn't me to go to the ER each time I have a migraine, about 3 times a week. I cannot also take anything per os due to my strong emesis.

My neuro gave me nubain inj at home every 4 to 6 hours.

It can be done in IM, IV, or Sub, in anyway, you cannot go wrong.

These type of med is not a ready to go pen like the imitrex inj. You need to learn how to fill up the seringe, no bubbles....

Most of insurance don't cover the inj except the imitrex. I was able to get cover through mine because it goes under medical and no pharmacy. Call your ins to find out because the 10 vials, 1 ml, 10 mg are about $23.00, the 20mg are about $50.00. You need to shop around and ask for a price. I saved $10.00 from Walgreens to my local pharmacy. The side effects of this med is nausea but works great for me.

I hope it will help you. Good luck.

Christelle
