Q: I took verapamil to get rid of clusters a few weeks ago and had a terrible reaction to it, water retention swelling, liver problems, and diarrhoea. I stopped it now for a week but still feel rough.

Any idea till I feel more human? Thanks

Hi nadia,

You poor thing, from what I just read, it sounds like you had a pretty "good" allergic reaction to this medication. How "rough" are you feeling? You may want to call the doctor and let him know what is going on. Did you let him/her know how awful you felt? See what he says, then let me know, ok?

Mind if I provide you with some additional information on cluster  headache?

Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker and is used to treat high blood pressure, as a preventive medication for Migraines and other conditions as your doctor sees fit. It is also used for cluster headache as a preventive medication, not an abortive one. We have more information on cluster headache in this article in you'd like to read it; Cluster Headaches - The Basics

Treatments that may abort or shorten the len.gth of a cluster attack include Imitrex injection or nasal spray, DHE- 45, and 100% oxygen by mask.

Hope to hear how you are,

Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your answer, yes spoke to my doc and he said the side effects would go with time - they have and I am getting bettter although it has taken a while.

I use the triptan injections and oxygen but was getting 4 a day. Despite the side effects the verepamil did stop them. The clusters are coming back now.

I am on a waiting list for a GON inplant as I get hemplegic migraines too.

I guess I will have to live with them till then.

Thanks for the article link.

Hope you are well. Nadia

Hi nadia,

Glad to hear you are feeling better. What is the GON implant? I'm not sure I've ever heard of this before.

Looking forward to the answer!

Nancy
