Should I start taking a potassium supplement with Topamax, just in case?

I just filled my perscription for Topamax for the prevention of migraines. So, oviously I haven't started having any side affects yet. But, in the article I read on this site says that you might experience tingling in the hands and feet. So, does this medicine lower the amount of potassium in the body, is that why you get the side affects? If so, should I start taking potassium just in case?

My first real experience with chronic head pain...

Hi Melissaraeby,

Topamax works can work wonders for many people, especially if started out the right way which is a slow taper up. Any time we are interested in taking a supplement, we need to discuss them first with our doctor before we take them. Potassium can be a good thing to use when taking Topamax, but again, please talk it over with your doctor.

Our information on Topamax can be found HERE.

Good luck

Nancy
