Q: What is the connection between sub-clinical Hypothyroidism and Migraine with Aura?

All six brothers and sisters have migraine with aura.  3 of them are on thyroid meds and sometime prevent migraines when their meds for hypothyroidism is treated.

What is the connection?

Thank you,

Mary Mac

Hi mary mac,

First, if I may talk about FHM first. Since it is a rare form of Migraine disease, and you seem to have a strong family history of Migraine with aura, it is vital that you be treated by a Migraine specialist - we have list you can see here. Have you read our information on FHM? Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics. Another interesting article that may be of great value to you and your family is about genetic testing a FHM. Hemiplegic Migraine - Genetic Testing May Be Helpful.

Migraine disease and thyroid disease can often be comorbid conditions, meaning they happen at the same time but are independent of each other. Migraine, Headache, and Thyroid. I hope this answers some questions for you.

Good luck

Nancy

Hello:   Indeed I have Hemiplegic Migraine and 1st and only full stroke like episode when I was about 57 years old.   All tests were ran that were possible and my migraine specialist let me out of the hospital when he cleared all tests for other possibilities.   My children are biologists and are  very aware of the genetic connection.  all symptoms were temporary, and do not use any migraine preventative meds because of the side effects. and they do not hold the incidence of aura down.   Rain & weather seem to be the biggest triggers.  My son and on of my daughters get migraine and migraine with aura.   Since status migraine will continue, I use the lowest dose of dexamethazone possible, and discontinue it as soon as possible.  My auras are a bit psychedelic, but I am not concerned about them any more.

Calcium blockers have been considered, because I respond poorly to inderal which used to helped a lot.

I seem to have a lot of migraine aura visually, fogged thinking, hear strange stuff, have frozen face and droopy eye.

I now am trying the 2 month of lowest dose thyroid med possible, and will see what happens.

I am now 64 years old and migraine pain is not so intense, but the other symptoms still are around.

My migraine neurologist has another older lady who has the same diagnosis in his practice in so calif.   Seems that the situation that has been described as text book is now more common.

I do have a good migraine dr. who studied at the Diamond Headache Clinic and mixes accupunture with traditional migraine pharacology with some success.

Anemia has been a problem for me because I easily bleed from  NSAIDS.

Thanks for your concern and interest.
