Q: Help finding integrative migraine doctor in west palm beach, fl.

Are there any doctors in the west palm beach area that you can recommend that treat migraines with an integrative approach? I have had migraine and tension migraine headaches since childhood.  I have tried only a few prescription preventatives and several alternative therapies to prevent my headaches.  I currently am experiencing 2-3 headaches a week which I treat with Frova.  I am desperate to find a doctor that could help me find a regimin that would minimize the frequency and intensity of my headaches.  Unfortunately, I do not currently have health insurance and would need a doctor who would be willing to treat me without it.

Hello, S.O.S.,

The word "integrative" is used so differently by different people that I'm not sure what it is you're looking for.

I can tell you that we maintain a listing of Migraine and headache specialists who have been recommended to us by their patients. Take a look at that listing in Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I don't know of any Migraine specialists who are unwilling to treat patients without insurance. All of the specialists I know will treat patients whether they have insurance or not. Some specialists, in fact, will not bill insurance companies because of the difficulties they've had with insurance companies in the past.

Hope this helps,

Teri

Thank you so much for your response.  When I said integrative I was referring to doctors that are willing to combine both medical and alternative therapies.  The neurologists I've been to only prescribed meds that were not helpful and left me feeling lousy.  They did not seem knowledgeable about alternative therapies and only wanted to keep trying me on different anti-seizure meds.

A migraine specialist that I recently read about in my area is Dr. Paul Winner, "7 Steps to A Healthy Brain", author, but unfortunately he only takes patients with insurance because of the costs of the tests he will prescribe.  That's why I asked about doctors that will work with patients without insurance.

I currently take Frova but the frequency of my headaches is really getting to me. I tried chiropractic care for 3 months with no significant improvement and get at least some relief from acupuncture.  I also take vitamins daily : B2, COQ10, fish oil, B-complex and magnesium. I have great energy when I'm not dealing with a headache. I'm just tired of trying to be my own doctor and would like to get some help. Since I have no insurance and funds are limited, I really can't afford to go to another doctor that has no significant results in helping people with migraines.  If you have any other suggestions for me I would really appreciate the feedback.  Thanks so much for listening.

I looked at the doctors on your Patient Recommended list but none of the ones listed were anywhere near me.  Any other ideas on finding a migraine doctor in my area that has good results?

You can check the listings of the American Headache Society at http://www.achenet.org/ and of the National Headache Foundation at http://www.headaches.org.

I hope this helps, but truthfully, many of us have to travel several hours to get to a good specialist. Hopefully, you won't have to.
