Q: Do others find generic Cafergot Oral works better for migraine prevention than other meds?

I take the generic Cafergot Oral for migraine control. I have a heart murmur and fear taking anything that might effect my heart. I have tried other narcotic meds but found it did nothing for pain, and only caused me to lose time.

Hello,

I don't know if you'll get any responses on this. I know of nobody who is using Cafergot as a preventive, nor do I know any doctors who still prescribe it as a preventive. Even when it IS used for prevention, it's not meant to be used that way long-term. Take a look at our Cafergot Profile.

There are many, many medications that can be used for Migraine prevention - over 100 of them. Some of them are the same medications often used for heart issues. You can find a list of them in our article Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

If your doctor feels Cafergot is safe with your heart, you might ask him about the triptan Migraine abortive medications -- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, etc.

If you're not already, you might benefit from seeing a Migraine specialist. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Hope this helps!
Teri

These triptan medications do sometimes work but trouble is they are expensive and no generics are yet available, maybe the end of the year imitrex will be. The cafergot and fiorcet do come in generic forms and if they work for you, then I would stick with them.
