Q: How can I show my boss that I am not 'lazy' when I take 2-3 days off due to Migraines and that I am actually suffering with a Neurological diesease?

I work as a Nurse, and as such thought that my direct managers would understand that Migraines are not 'just headaches' and that I need to take time off when they occur (as my direct manager is also a qualifed Nurse). Unfortunately they do not and are calling me lazy, and telling me I am unsuitable for work on a Ward as I 'let the team down' through my 'recurrent absences'. This is incredibly upsetting for me. How do I show them that I am not being lazy, and that I truly do suffer when I am away from work? They are threatening me with disciplinary action due to my 'poor work attendance' because unfortunately, despite taking preventative medication every day, I still suffer from a Migraine Attack 2 to 3 times a month.

Cazamerline,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

I'm sorry you're going through this. I just isn't right, but then, I don't need to tell you that. Take a look at our article Migraine and Headache Education for Those Who "Don't Get It". There are links there to some letters that you can print out and give to people to teach them about Migraine. Hopefully, they'll be helpful.

Please keep me posted?

Welcome again,

Teri

Does your employer have more than 50 employees?  Have you worked there more than 12 months?  If so, you are eligible under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Though most people think of this for long term leave, there is actully "Intermittant FMLA", which can be used for conditions that cause random disability, like Migraine.

My boss used to have a problem with me taking time for my migraines, and they are a lot more frequent.  Once I got FMLA approved though, it kind of made her understand.  It basically says "According to the Federal Government, I am disabled on these days".  I also made a point instead of saying "I need to take a sick day", I would say "I need to take an FMLA day".  Also, it will give you some job security as far as your absences are concerned.

Also, have you had a one on one with your boss?  Just because someone is an RN doesn't mean they know all that much about migraine.  I've been to neurologists who barely know what they are talking about.  I had to do that with my boss.  I told her that head pain is the symptom everyone knows about, but actually the least disabling symptom I get.  I gave her a run down, with a little "too much information" for shock value, and after that convo I think she really made a point to be more understanding about how sick I really am.

But first things first, FMLA. If your employer doesn't meet those conditions, speak to Human Resources about your options.

Good Luck!

You aren't, we have a recongized disability by the SSD, and can be placed on government disability for this anytime.

I have fmla, which allows for 2-3 days off per month, sometimes, I just wait the migraine out. I am embarassed, my co-workers dislike my work ethic, and I am pretty sure that my boss is feeling the heat. I can't talk about it either, because really? It's not their business. I am not a wimp, if anyone had to endure the  pain of a migraine, AND WORK, and do it 2-3 times a month, I am positive that they would be in the same boat. But I sympathize with your in the dog house feelings, no one is compassionate when they have to be at work & you're not.
