Q: HELP what is the best migraine prevention drug?

I suffer from 1 to 2 very bad migraines a week.  I cannot do this much longer.  I am looking for any sort of relief, prevention, anything.  I have all of the seziure drugs with no luck.  I have been on many blood pressure pills, they only offer temprary relief.  I have altered my diet.  I am looking for something new.  I have even tried oxygen treatments.  PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?????  Had an MRI done last year, not good, lots of white spots.  What next

henrya,

This may sound simplistic, but do you now what triggers your Migraines? Trigger identification and management is a vital component of managing Migraine disease. One of the best tools for identifying triggers is a good Migraine diary. You can download a free diary workbook from our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary. Some of us have food triggers; some of us don't. It's always good to check this out, and an elimination diet is the best way to do that. For more information and a workbook on this, see Managing Migraine - Migraine Trigger Foods.

Yours is an excellent question. The problem is that there simply is no answer to it. We have NO medications that were originally developed for Migraine prevention, so we're working with hand-me-down medications originally developed to treat other conditions. Our bodies respond so differently to medications that what works well for me may or may not work well for you.

Luckily, there are so many medications that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention -- over 100 of them -- that it's literally impossible to have tried them all. You can find a list of potential Migraine and headache preventives in Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists

Hope this helps,

Teri

Relpax is hands down the best for me!  I keep them w/ me at all times.  You must take them when you feel one coming on though!  Don't wait too long!

My problem with them is you are only allowed 6 tabs per box.  You take 2 per migraine-2 hours apart, and believe me you will start to feel it again when those 2 hours are up!  Please don't misunderstand though, they do not make you high in any way-just magically take away the pain so you can function! Pure Heaven!  I just don't know why the drug companies are so stingy with them. It is especially a problem if you are going on vacation, and you want to take enough with you to be covered.  I will go weeks without needing them, and then suddenly, weeks when I need them daily!  The trick is to be prepared!  I also take 3 Tri's every night for prevention purposes (75 mg). They help keep the monsters at bay somewhat.  MOre than that dose made me coo-koo though!  Sorry for all the mistakes.  It is 3 am, and guess why I am awake??!! Undecided  Anyway, good luck.  It is a horrible curse, that most people can't possibly understand, but Relpax will keep you going.  Now if the drug companies and insurance co would only have a heart!! Or  perhaps their own migraines, than maybe we could get more than 6 at a time! Hang in there, and let me know if your tried miracle Relpax out!  Remember -don't hesitate-take at first sign!  I promise you won't have any unpleasant side effects-it is not a pain killer, per se-just blessed relief!  Have the 2nd ready to go for hour 2!  Good luck!

Hi, I have had migraines my whole life and tried many preventative medicines and complimentary medicines.  Recently I was shown a some info on a study being done for Migraines in Melbourne that had some success using 5mg of Folic Acid daily plus B vitamins, so I thought I would give it a try.  Since taking 5mg of Folic Acid daily for nearly 6 months I have noticed a huge improvement, instead of up to 4  migraines a month and have just been getting a headache/migraine a few days before my period, which also goes away quickly with sumatriptan meds.  This is a high dose of folic acid much higher than in most dietary supplements and in New Zealand you have to request from a Pharmacist, cant just buy it off the shelf.
