Saturday, November 22, 2008 Lori asks

Q: I have been on topamax for two years at 50 mgs. per day. It was working wonders, but now my

migraines seem to be increasing and my doctor wants to increase me to 100 mgs. 2 per day.

I'm afraid that my body has gotten use to the topamax and I'm just going to have to increase the dosage and I'm afraid of the side effects affected my intellect especially

at work.  I also take the triptan Axert when I do get migraines.  Frova does not work for me.  Are there any new medications on the horizon for migraine suffererers?

Thank you,

Lori,

Your Topamax situation is one you need to discuss fully with your doctor. The side effects of Topamax do seem to be dosage dependent -- stronger side effects when you inrease the dosage. If you're not experiencing severe side effects at this point, you might be able to increas the dosage without much increase. To go up from 50 mg per day to 100 mg twice a day, it should be increased by no more than 25 mg per week, so it would take you about six weeks to get to the higher disage.

The newest addition to the triptan family is called Treximet. It's a combintion of sumatriptan (imitrex) and naproxyn sodium.

There are a couple of new Migraine abortive medications in clinical trials. They will hopefully be shown effective in trials, without some of the side effects of triptans. It will still be some time before they're on the market.

I have suffered from migraines since I was 9 yrs.old...I know how horrible they are. (I am also a nurse)

I thought  TOPOMAX was the answer to my prayers. When I increased the dose like most Dr.s do (they start you off on a low dose and then increase it)I was driving to work and noticed my vision was blurry.

The Topomax had given me glaucoma, and thank God I was smart enough to know ALL the side efects. Be VERY careful with this drug. I had to taken off the drug IMMEDIATELY,and am now just on the usual "pain crap" that us migraine victims rarely keep down. Good luck. I LOVED how it decreased my migraine frqency...but it damn near blinded me.(My vision returned to normal once I got OFF it!)PLEASE....READ UP ON ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS!!!!!

God Bless.
