Q: Migraines and SSRI's Medication issues

I take 50 mg of Zoloft daily, and this one is the ONLY anti deppressant that I've found that worked for me. Now with that said, I've had terrible migraines my whole life, to the point where I would vomit, and just the noise of quiet was even too loud. My doctor prescribed Metoclopramide, prednisone, nadolol, hydrocodone, and zomig tablets. He also upped my prescription for zoloft to 100mg. I read online that taking triptans such as zomig can be fatal while taking SSRI's like zoloft. It's made me very nervous to take them together. My doctor told me that I have the typical nauseating migraines as well as cluster migraines which seem to last 6 days straight. Can you give me any advice? Thanks in advance

Hi MissTara,

Serotonin Syndrome is a fairly rare condition that may occur when certain medications we take build up the chemical serotonin in our bodies. Stopping the syndrome can be done by stopping the offending medication quickly, and if someone is going to get serotonin syndrome, it usually happens within the first several hours of taking or increasing the medication with serotonin. We have more information on this here: Migraine Medications May Cause 'Serotonin Syndrome'

Good luck

Nancy
