Q: Might persistent photophobia be an indication of migraine ?

My son , age 23, suffers from persistent photophobia.  He has had mild light sensitivity since he was about three years old and it has gotten worse over time.   He now has extreme light sensitivity to any kind of light both indoors and outdoors. He has no headaches or aura although he experiences visual perserveration.  There is a history of aura without headache in the family( mother and maternal great-aunt.) He was treated for dry eye symptoms, but did not help with his light sensitivity.

Hi Ann!

Photophobia is a sign of the "headache phase", but for a proper dignosis, he would have to see a doctor.

There are stages within a migraine attack: see Anatomy of a Migraine for more info on the migraine process. It is possible he is having Silent Migraines, but again, he would have to go to a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Also, maybe having an eye exam if he has not had one in a while would be a good idea as well.

Good Luck!
