I'm trying to get pregnant but have migraines 4-5 days/wk. How can I get through this without meds?
I've suffered from severe migraines my whole life. We started trying to get pregnant this month. I've been off all medications for three weeks, and I'm starting to lose my mind. I have full-blown migraines 4-5 days of the week, and I haven't been out of bed for more than a few hours since we started. How can I get through this without medication? Do I have to give up on being a mother and look for other options? I'm not certain I can take too much more of this.
i would talk to a therapist/social worker as well as the md about options.
and if you are not able to control migraines enough to function would adoption or foster kids be better option?
do youhave too many migrine symptoms to realistically handle a baby and toddler? ther are older kids cant get homes might be a better choice for you..
many other options too.

Dear kb10,
This is a very personal decision for you and your partner. If you are having Migraine attacks 4-5 days a week, you may need to reconsider your options at this point. It is a very difficult time, and I feel for you.
We have a few Ask the Clinician questions about Migraine and pregnancy you can find HERE, and HERE.
Good luck
Nancy

You sound exactly like me. When I wanted children my biggest concern was trying to not take meds before getting pregnant as I did not want any drugs in the baby even at 1 day in utero. I took weaker meds & then OTC & then stopped for 3 days before ovulation. That was almost unbearable. After I got pregnant I took nothing ever!--that is the difficult part. I had a migraine for the entire 1st semester & then maybe half of each month until I gave birth. I was in bed in the dark weeping from the pain too many times to think about. It is all so worth it when you hold that perfect healthy baby! My son could speak at 8 months & read & print at 20 months. Before he was 2 he was saying things like "Come on Mom, be a sport"! He brought me so much joy & I didn't know I could love anyone like that. I suffered again to give him a little sister 2 yrs. & 3 mos. later & again healthy & beautiful--wearing cute dresses & dancing around to music & at just over one yr. when asked her favourite singer said "Madonna Mommy". My mother was always going to babysit when I was in bed with migraines or anytime I needed her--she died when I had my first baby, so I had no help. I disagree 150% with the other answers--missing out on having your own babies if that is a strong maternal urge I think would be devastating. I know my children changed my life & made my life. I could never have a career because of the chronic migraines--I got fired from banal jobs for absenteeism--your children never fire you. It is difficult for children when you're sick--but on good days you can make up for it. It is not easy, I won't lie, but so worth it. Good Luck!
