Debora,

This can really be answered only by the child's doctor because the answer needs to be based on several things:

      •  Review of the child's medical history and family medical history.

      •  Review of the child's symptoms.

      •  A complete physical exam.

      •  Any other medical conditions the child may have.

      •  All prescription and over-the-counter medications, complementary treatments, and dietary supplements the child is using.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Good luck,

Teri

Absolute first thing is to see a doctor.  My oldest daughter (now 25) has been suffering from migraines since she was 10 and our family doctor started her on a low dose of elavil at bedtime and propranalol (a beta blocker) in the morning  By the time she was 15 she was taking higher doses of each, but the elavil was causing some weight gain so she backed her dose down and was taking midrin for the migrain attacks.  Now she's treating the migraines with imitrex and compazine.  Because I suffered from migraines as well, I was able to recognize and sympathize with her symptoms.  Your 11 year old is lucky that you recognize and are anxious to treat his or her migraines.  Their doctor is most definately the best place to start and keep on until you find one who takes the problem seriously.  Good luck.

The first step would be to see a headache specialist.  Be involved with the medication prescribed for your child, don't be afraid to express your concerns.  I have had migraines since I was 5 and was on so much medication at one point that I would fall asleep in school and trip on the stairs.  It didn't help the pain either.  There are a lot of medications out there, but be aware of side effects.
