Q: Maxalt Melts Oral work so well to prevent migraines

If I feel like I may wake up the next morning with a Migraine....I can take a Maxalt Melt when I go to bed, and will almost always wake up without a Migraine.  Is there another med that is "close" to the Maxalt Melt that would do the same thing ?  The Maxalt Melt doesn't work once I HAVE a Migraine.....thanks

Hi Tricia,

Maxalt Melt Oral is a medication that was developed to abort a Migraine attack. It really isn't to be used as a prevention medication. This abortive medication is a triptan and there are seven other triptans you may want to look into (not as preventives - but to abort a Migraine.) They are: Imitrex, Axert, Relpax, Zomig, FrovaAmerge and Treximet. Midrin and Migranal Nasal are other abortive medications.

There are many other medications that can be used for prevention if you are getting more than three Migraines a month.  Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

Good luck

Nancy

Tricia,

It's doubtful that the Maxalt is preventing Migraines. As Nancy said, it's an abortive medication. I'm not sure what you're feeling when you way you "feel like I may wake up with a Migraine," but maybe what you're feeling is actually the first phase of the Migraine attack, the first possible phase of a Migraine. You can read more on this in Anatomy of a Migraine.

Nancy gave you links to read about the other triptans -- the same type of medicaton as Maxalt. Talk to your doctor about these. He or she should have samples of most of them so you could try them before filling an expensive prescription. Each of the triptans binds to different combinations of serotonin receptiors, so your body may react differently to each of them. That's why it's worth it to try the others.

Hope this helps,

Teri
