Q: major hair loss issue. Is it medication, stress, diet?

I was previously taking 300mg of Topamax per day and had a lot of hair loss.  I decided to go off the drug (with my doctor's help), and am now taking Depakote and Pamelor as my preventatives.

I am also following the advice from the book, "Heal Your Headaches" and am eating an extremely healthy diet, exersizing daily, and sleeping great.  I also take a Super B Vitamin supplement daily.

However, although my migraines are MUCH BETTER now, my hair loss is continuing and seems worse than before!

I am going to a dermatologist in a few days, however, I wondered if hair loss was a side effect of these drugs?

I'm really worried about the clumps of hair in the shower and the shedding of my hair all over the house!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Icepick

icepick,

Depakote can cause hair loss too. That said, I don't have any way to definitely know what's causing your hair loss.

In addition to discussing the Depakote, you might talk with your doctor about supplementing folic acid and biotin.

Keep me posted?

I wish I could tell you because I too suffer from hair loss.   In my case, it seems to be inevitable as it has occurred in both grandmothers and mother and father.    So when I was told several years ago that Depakote caused hair loss in some people, I thought it may be a factor.   When the Depakote stopped working for migraine prevention, I hoped my hair would return.    Well, it hasn't, so I believe the real culprit in me is my hereditary conditions.   It's very hard as a woman to be losing her hair, isn't it?   If you hear of anything that helps, please share.

Hi Ice Pick,

I was on Depakote at one time; my hair fell out in clumps and I gained weight quickly.  I guess the important question is; is it helping?  I feel your pain!  There's always side effects and you never know where they are from.

I also took Topamax for a while.  I think it was helping, but it made me so confused I couldn't stay on it.
