Q: I am 60 with post-menopausal migraines that nothing seems to relieve. Pain in right back of skull.

These migraines started about 2 &1/2 years ago.  I was migraine-free for a year.  Traditional meds do not help.  I get slight relief from Fiorinal or drinking lots of caffeine.  I don't drink coffee otherwise.  This current headache has lasted over 3 weeks.  It NEVER goes away.  It may ease up a little, but it's here when I wake up.  I am an elementary school librarian and it's really difficult doing my job justice.  I have 25 forty minute classes each week, in addition to running the library.  Any advice would be appreciate.  Thanks, Kathy K.

Hi Kathy,

First let me say I'm sorry to hear about your daily pain. It is exhausting and frustrating. However, sometimes we can unwittingly create another problem called medication overuse headache (MOH) if we take certain prescription and/or OTC medications, like fiorinal, more than two to three days a week. The only way to stop MOH is to discontinue the offending medication. For more information on MOH continue reading: Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires  and

Some Migraine Meds Increase Risk of Transformed Migraine.

Migraine pain lasting longer than 72 hours without a four-hour pain-free break while awake could be a condition called Status Migrainous. This condition puts us at an increased risk of stroke. Read Status Migrainous - The Basics for more information.

It 's very easy to feel as if you've tried every preventive out there, but with over 100 medications in use for Migraine prevention and virtually endless combinations, it's literally impossible to have tried them all. Don't lose hope! Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!  is a great article.

Good luck

Nancy
