06/14/09

Hi All,

I haved suffered from migraines for over 18yrs and in the past year my headaches have worsened so much that I suffer from chronic daily headache.  I suffer from migraine attacks about 6-8 times per month.  I have been referred to Jefferson Headache Unit and I have an appointment on July 22nd.  I will be seeing Dr. Charleston, (one of the fellows), and I am seeking anyones experience with the headache unit (good or bad).  Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi mcc79.

We have a discussion forum that may be helpful for specific information on The Jefferson Headache Center. It is a great place to find specific information, support and/ or questions on various topics. Some of our members are treated there and will be happy to share their experiences with you. You can get to the forum  HERE.

I am currently being treated by the founder of the Jefferson Headache Center - Dr. Stephen Silberstein.  Before going to the center, I was in terrible pain everyday.  I am going through treatment and have been admitted for infusion therapy for a week and it has helped.  We are still working to bring my headache level down and to achieve a headache free day.  I have consistently had a headache everyday since December.

Here's the bottom line - they will not give up until they get you better.  They are a "team" - so you won't just see Dr. Charleston, you'll see a psychologist, a p.a., a nurse, and other docs wil consult to figure out the best way to treat you.

Dr. Silberstein just updated Wolff's Headache (Eighth Edition). He and his team are very well respected and known world-wide.  Just sitting in the waiting room - you see that people have flown in from all over to meet with these docs.

I wish you the best of luck and if you'd like to speak further - contact me at wendy.hamm@comcast.net

thanks so much for the info.  Do you know of any hotels around the clinic, I will be traveling about 3hrs to get there, so I want to find a hotel to stay in the night before, because my appt. is at 8am.  Thanks for all the info! -- Megan

I've been to the Jefferson Headache Ct three times (a three hour drive from where I live because it was supposed to be so wonderful.) They admitted me and my first tip off that it was not great, was there were several patients who had been there seven or eight times. They took me off all my meds cause they thought that I had rebound headaches, but when I came off of them I was left with such bad headaches that I couldn't function and they told me to give my body a few months to adjust, (not realistic 'cause I had three kids who needed a mother who could get out of a dark room with no sound.) After all of that, my doctor at home just put me back on my old meds that let me function. So my experience with Jefferson was awful (not to mention I went there in the summer and the building was so old there was no air conditioning. And in addition, the day I was released, I had a blinding headache in the middle of the night and my doc there forgot to turn her page on and I couldn't reach her for twelve hours when I was in excruciating pain. I was not at all impressed. I think my local rinky dink hospital is way better and more compassionate at treating migraines than Jefferson. And with the internet, there's no reason your doctor can't get any info they have without you having to pick up and disrupt your whole life which we all know doesn't help a migraine.

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
