Q: Occipital nerve block

I am getting an occipital nerve block in my neck tomorrow that's supposed to help treat my tension & migraine headaches.

Has anyone had this before?  What was your experience?  Did it help?  Did you have to get another after 3 months?  Any advice?  Any precautions?  I have looked online to research more info., but there isn't much out there.

TIA for your responses.

i had an occipital nerve block that seemed to help for about a week. after that my doctor sent me for a nerve block where they use an xray machine and inject iodine to trace the nerves and then inject steroids and lidocaine. I forget the name but this one was sucessfull for 20 days which is a miracle for me. I was told that because it was effective I am a candiate for another procedure but they do no want to continue to give me the blocs because the inject at the spine and it is too invaisive to do every 20 days. I would definatly give it a try. I pointer is to ice to injection spot as it can be painfull after it unfreezes (for both kinds). also it triggered a migraine for me each time for several days not too much worse i already have daily chronic migraine, but the benefit of the pain being lessend was worth it I live with 9/10 or 8/10 daily and i had days of 5/10 to 8/10 no 9s or 10s.

I have received nerve blocks in the past.  They work some what.  It usually takes a couple of days to see any effect but I do get some.  Just like everything that I seem to try it works good at first but seems to become less effective as time goes on.  It is totally worth it if you havn't ever had one before.  I usually end up getting them about every 3-4 months at the same time I get my botox injections.  The doctor usually does them all at the same time.  I would give it a try.  Good luck let me know how it goes

If your doctor is doing occipital nerve blocks to get rid of your migraines have you thought to ask him/her about the possibility of accipital nerve stimulators? It's a device that is implanted over the occipital nerve and essentially works as a TENS unit would provide electrical currents and stimulation to the nerve all the time.  You have the ability to control the strength and freqency of the unit.  And you and turn it on and off at will.  I had on implanted 2 years ago and it cut my migraine occurences in half. I used to have migraine pain every day at a level of 9 from 1-10 when I got then unit it was down to a 2-3.  Now I stil get common migraines and my doctor and I have those to work thru but they aren't half as bad as they used to be now that I have the ONS.  It's something to think about.  St. Jude's developed them and is continouslly doing more and more research.  I say all this because nerve blocks never worked for me they'd last for a couple weeks and then I'd have to wait 2 1/2 months for the next one.  The ONS was a godsend.
