The pain clinic I am seen in wants to send me around the country to a Headache institue. Has anyone done this? What was it like?

Hopeful,

Treatment with Dr. Young at the Jefferson Headache Center in Philly is what really turned things around for me. If you want to read about my experience, you can do so HERE.

In my opinion, choosing the doctor is far more important that choosing a particular clinic or facility. The newest, fanciest institute in the world can't help unless they also have great doctors.

Hope this helps,

Teri

I'm  looking for answers, too, regarding treatment at the Michigan Headache and Neurological Institute or the California-based Keeler Center for the Study of Headaches.

I am looking into this also!  I am 40 and want my life back.  you may want to google headache clinics and what to look for in them.  It needs to really look  at you as an individual and address your pain/migraines specifically.  Make sure they treat you with respect and you can usually find out how the rank at BBB and I want to say pain.com.  Hang in there it could be very beneficial.

I underwent inpatient treatment at Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute (office in Ann Arbor, hospital in Chelsea, MI) in July of 2008. I was inpatient for 13 or 14 days. During that time they gave me DHE IV treatment along with a number of other drugs. When I had pain spikes they tested various abortive meds.

In April of 2009 I underwent inpatient treatment at Jefferson Headache Center in Philadelphia. Same idea but I was only in for 5 days. IV treatment included DHE, torodol, benedryl and one other.

Both centers are considered top notch in the industry. In Michigan they tend to keep patients longer. There is more of a "pain management" emphasis on the problem. The hospital is only one floor and is on 80 acres in the woods. They have classes such as "therapedic use of crafts" and "relaxation". You wear regular clothes and eat in a dining room with other patients. Lots of contact with other people in a similar situation. Jeffereson Headache Center in Philadelphia is much more "hospital-like". I never saw the other patients. I was not allowed to leave the 6th floor, no common areas to hang. Still a very cutting edge approach to treating intractable headaches. Staff is very friendly and knowledgable. Also the only place I've heard of that offers lydocaine IV treatment for headaches. I almost went crazy there after being cooped up for 5 days.
