Q: What is the best substitute or "trade out" medication for divalproex?

If that medication worked but you can't deal with the side effects, is there another medication that functions similarly?

I suffer from migraine with vertigo...vertigo being there 24/7. Divalproex worked okay for me but as it was time for an increase and the side effects were already pretty bad, I am in search of something else. HELP!

Hi jessicar08,

Depakote, generic divalproex sodium, is in a class of medications called neuronal stabilizing agents (antiseizure medications) and is actually one of the few medications FDA approved for Migraine prevention. There are however, many other options in this same class. I didn't have good luck with this medication due to some unwanted side effects that didn't dissipate after six weeks. Zonegran, Keppra (which I am taking now) Neurontin, Lyrica and others. Take a look at Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

I hope this helps,

Nancy
